With spending some time in Berlin, a little bit of shopping was obviously on my agenda. On top of my list was the new MONKIND store in Schöneberg. At first, MONKIND had caught my attention when participating in Berlin’s independent design market, VOODOO MARKET. Then I got a lucky and the market’s founder, who is a dear friend of mine, gifted the little bird with a cute deer jumper and a cherry stone cushion for his first birthday. Last summer at the Playtime fair in Paris, I then had the chance to meet Valeria, MONKIND’s founder, as well as her husband Stewart, two people of a very special kind and who are both deeply involved in this family-run business. Since then, I have followed MONKIND’s journey on Instagram and am glad to see that their pieces have become popular in the whole of Europe.
Beside the simplistic but playful design, I love the fact that MONKIND pieces are made of exclusively locally-sourced organic materials and production takes place either in their StudioStore or in a nearby GOTS-certified production facility. Even the prints are imagined by Berlin based illustrator Sarah Neuendorf who is also known under the name Gretas Schwester , proving that every piece of MONKIND is indeed made in Berlin.
The store, which opened last autumn, features the current MONKIND collection as well as a nice selection of prints, cushions, toys, cups and plates from Gretas Schwester. The space scores with its great light and peaceful vibe so it was easy to take all the time I needed (I even had a glass of water, big preggo one I am) while selecting some cute pieces for my son and the little miss in my belly, with the the jeans romper, the desert t-shirt and the coral pants being my favorites.
