I once spent an entire morning with a friend on a porch of a cafe on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg. What we were seeing was so different from the scenery in Brussels where we lived at that time. This was hipstermania at its finest. Really. We did not have to talk but just watch people passing. It was a good morning. Like a nice movie, easy and cosy with good coffee (well, tea for myself).
Here in Amsterdam, there is a cafe that gives me this feeling of peace and that I love to go to quite frequently. It is certainly not a coincidence that this place is called Bedford-Stuyvesant. Located in the East of Amsterdam on Javastraat near the Dappermarkt, Bedford-Stuyvesant is an American coffee bar that has not only a nice looking interior but that also serves various coffees (obviously), tasty drinks (i.e. fruit and veggie smoothies, ginger beer, yum), sandwiches (don’t forget, we’re in the Netherlands 😉 ) and tea that is different from the usual (i.e. cactus, pineapples, papaya and fig). And cake. Delicious cake!
These are already good points that speak for this cafe but what will you think if I tell you that they provide a changing mat (located in the women’s bathroom) as well as a whole play area for kids? Yep, in the back area of the cafe you can find a corner with a low sized table and a suitcase filled with toys. If your kids are big enough, make sure to get on one of the comfy couches and enjoy your drinks while the little ones are playing. Parents with small babies will also be delighted as the place fits strollers and plays nice and cozy music at a low volume level that lets newborns sleep without problems.
If you ever make it to the East of Amsterdam (which I highly recommend), you should definitely pop by Bedford-Stuyvesant. You may see less hipsters than in Williamsburg but there is a big chance that Thiago and I will be there, eating cake and making some noise in the back 😉Bedford-Stuyvesant: Javastraat 15, 1094HA Amsterdam, Monday – Friday 8am-7pm, Saturday 9am-7pm, Sunday 10am – 7pm Good for kiddos as they provide: Changing mat (not a fixed changing table), play area and toys, sandwich for kids (two options: chocolate or peanut butter. I let you judge 🙂 . )
